Criminal prodigy Kaz
Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim
it, he'll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:
Break into the notorious Ice Court
(a military stronghold that has never been breached)
Retrieve a hostage
(who could unleash magical havoc on the world)
Survive long enough to collect his reward
(and spend it)
Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done - and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable - if they don't kill each other first.

I fully understand the love this book has received from many people. I really do. It gave me a Shades of Magic vibe, which I really enjoyed.
“No mourners. No funerals. Among them, it passed for 'good luck'.”
But there was just something about this book that made it really hard for me to get into the story. Maybe it were the Dutch names (I am Dutch but hate the language, so they kind of threw me off), maybe is was the amount of different countries, languages and new terms that I had to get used to. I feel like I never really did get used to them. I mean, I understand the difference between the countries and the languages, and I know what most of the terms mean (like drüskelle, I kind of get it), but I had a lot of trouble with them. My mind just tended to wander of.
“We are all someone's monster.”
Again, that is probably just me. I did love the story, the characters and the relationships between them. I loved all the things that made them the people they were I loved the idea of this world Bardugo has created and the epic adventure these characters had. And the plottwists it had! Amazing!
“You love trickery."
"I love puzzles. Trickery is just my native tongue.”
"I love puzzles. Trickery is just my native tongue.”
So, overall, I did enjoy this book, it just took me a lot of effort to read. It took me way longer than usual, as I spent almost a month on finishing this book. For me, that is a looooong time. I do recommend this book though, because I did like it!
